Celebration or Requiem ?
The Festival of Law and Criminology at Aberystwyth took place on 19 January 2018 at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. It was a day of presentations, performance and discussions by academic staff and students, past and present, legal and criminal justice professionals, politicians and musicians, and was intended to capture the distinctive character of the Department of Law and Criminology at Aberystwyth University. For that day, the event generated a buzz of interest and enjoyment. It was conceived as both retrospective and prospective stock-taking, but also served as a valedictory occasion for some departing individuals. However, as time moves on the retrospective aspect may loom larger. Already the Department had disappeared in the summer of 2016 when it was peremptorily changed by the University into a 'theme' within the Institute of Business and Law, and misleadingly rebranded as the 'Aberystwyth Law School'. More will be written about the rise and fall of Law and Criminology at Aberystwyth in the near future.
